How to Avoid Malware

Data Binary Code Spiral

Malware avoidance is something every business needs to be aware of. Malware has many different forms that include viruses, spyware, and adware, all of which can range from a mild annoyance to complete system breakdown. Even more damaging than that is the potential of data breaches and sensitive information theft. That can cost you thousands of dollars and you might not be able to recover.

So what can you do to avoid malware affecting your Highland Park business?

Be internet aware

If a website asks you to install new software, you need to check that you know what it is, what it does and where it’s coming from. If you’re not sure, don’t install it. It’s better to be cautious than to download a virus.

Emails can be full of malware. A message from someone you know with an attachment can unwittingly hold a Trojan horse and spam mail should never be opened. Again, if you’re asked to install something, check it out.

Software downloaded from the internet can hold malware or install it along with the software you want. When installing, always read the message boxes before clicking “Next,” or “Ok” and read the user agreement! Yes, it’s long and boring, but it might save you a lot of trouble.

Secure your network

Your network is always going to be vulnerable so it’s your job to protect it as much as you can. Create a strong password for your Wi-Fi and have a guest Wi-Fi name and password for people outside your Highland Park organization. It’s also not a good idea to broadcast your network name; set it up so that you have to type it in each time you need to access it. Yes, it’s time consuming, but in the long run it’s worth it.

Security software

We shouldn’t have to remind people to install antivirus and anti-malware programs! Too many people still haven’t taken this basic step. Ideally, you should have a paid for program that automatically updates itself but even a free one is better than no protection at all. Microsoft does provide one for Windows users that works pretty well.  When considering which type of security software is necessary for you, be mindful of the effects of a potential attack.

Antivirus programs don’t always play well together – so having two or more doesn’t automatically lead to a more secure device. Try to get an antivirus that includes an anti-malware element – if yours doesn’t, find a stand-alone program that doesn’t interfere with your antivirus protection.

Spam filtering is also an important element and if your antivirus isn’t filtering enough, you may have to consider additional protection. Check your existing program. There may be a spam filtering element that isn’t turned on.

Use a firewall. If you aren’t running an independent firewall, make sure your Windows one is turned on and like antivirus protection, don’t run two at once.

The most important part of all these programs is to keep them updated – they can’t protect you if they’re not up to date. Your operating system and browser should also be regularly updated and this should be automatic, so check your settings. If the automated update is turned off, turn it on. Nobody remembers to update their device all the time.
