Benefits of BYOD

Guy on lap top in fieldThe idea of providing one’s own tech equipment in a corporate environment may not seem like an ideal concept. Factors like security post a big external threat when it comes to BYOD (bring your own device). A non-approved piece of tech certainly has the ability to compromise on-site security and gain access to information they shouldn’t have access to.

However, there is a silver lining to personal devices allowed on company grounds. While it’s not necessary to suddenly make all devices useable or work within network infrastructure, there are some costs to be saved with a little leeway.

Mobile connectivity is higher than it’s ever been. With apps for just about everything, combined with the use of cloud computing, employees have the ability to stay in touch with the businesses whenever and wherever they need to. Allowing them to bring their own approved mobile device will decrease the cost for mandatory hardware. It also gives employees more freedom and comfort since they are probably more familiar with their own devices. BYOD generally keeps workers happier too, leading to a more productive environment while simultaneously cutting costs.

To add to incentive, the maintenance and upkeep of technical devices is left to the employee should your company implement BYOD. This means replacements, repairs, or overall new devices are offloaded to the workers. While they gain use of personal devices, they maintain responsibility of said device.

On top of this, there’s plenty of communication to be had with devices outside of work. If you’ve read anything about cloud computing, you might remember the advantages of sending important files outside of company boundaries virtually any place in the world. The concept here is similar. Those familiar with their own personal devices are not only more responsive to company needs, they’re aware of them too. In other words, problems or important info can be relayed to workers outside of normal hours. Maybe an important file or error has occurred with a software program and a specialist needs to be made aware. With BYOD plans, that specialist can tackle the issue as soon as they come into work.

Additionally, this increases productivity all around. Sometimes difficulties are encountered, be it accidents, bad weather, traffic, sickness, or whatever else. However, based on the business, an employee can still work on projects with their mobile device thanks to an acceptable BYOD system. There’s more opportunity to keep the gears moving when traditional elements would stop it.

Ultimately, a BYOD system has various implementations for companies. It’s up to discussion where else it’s appropriate, such in an education environment. With these multiple communication outlets though, it’s anticipated that progress will move along at a smoother pace. There are drawbacks of course, such as possible leaks in security and the fact limitations would have to be put in place for personal devices, but with an appropriate system it’s certainly something that can cut costs and increase production.
